Nashville, Tennessee wouldn’t normally be considered the Mecca of the import community. But every year they have at least one opportunity to come close courtesy of the Import Alliance series. Established in 2006, the Import Alliance meet is the brainchild of a group of Tennessee-based automotive enthusiasts. Their goal is simple: bring other enthusiasts together from all over the country to share their passion for cars, and 3 years later, the numbers have grown by leaps and bounds. A simple phrase coined by Gil Scott Heron well before many of us were even born, and one that can be applied to a number of different subjects; though in our case, it’s the Honda movement as a whole. Earlier this year I mentioned the increase in Honda activity in magazine pages and covers, and I was curious as to whether it would slow down once the next big thing rolled around, as it had in the past. Well, that “thing” never arrived, and attention toward Honda builds has never been higher. Some say it was miraculously saved by the K series motor, though I’d have to disagree. There’s no question that motor has made the biggest impact on our community in years, but what were we saved from exactly? The D, B, H, and F series motors have kept us motivated this long; the K family merely broke some new ground. With the swap now perfected, the sky is the limit. Turbo and all motor builds will continue to reach new heights in 2010, as experimentation and aftermarket support have both steadily increased. The very first Niagara CRX meet took place in Canada back in June of ‘98 with just a handful of participants. Today, this event attracts huge crowds with over 150 CRXs in attendance. Import Showoff is regarded as the premiere import car show of the current era. Anytime there is a car show with Showoff and Mainstream Productions involved, you’re guaranteed a good showing. Ken Myoshi and his staff have always followed their own standards when it came to car shows. They weren’t about the glitz and glam or faux-club environment like other shows. Mainstream has always had their focus on the foundation of the community, which are the cars themselves. Over the years, the industry has taken a bit of a turn away from the cars and put more emphasis on lifestyle. Major sponsors began to put their efforts into other shows and abandoned the Import Showoff series. On top of that, the location that Nisei Showoff is held at annually was recently purchased and will be demolished to make way for a new high-rise building.
